讲人简介闵福德,著名汉学家、翻译家。曾师从牛津大学霍克思、澳洲国立大学柳存仁。曾与霍克思合作翻译《红楼梦》后四十回,并为企鹅经典丛书翻译过《易经》、《道德经》、《孙子兵法》及《聊斋志异》选本等。

Lecture 1: Songs on a Very Slow Boat

I'd love to getyou on a slow boat to China, all to myself alone.

诗经: 稣会到庞德

The Book of Songs 诗经 travels slowly in translation to theWest, from the early Latin of the Jesuit Father Alexandre de Lacharme in the 18th century, to James Legge’s HighVictorian in the 19th century, Bernhard Karlgren’s philological reconstruction & Arthur Waley’sBloomsbury ballads in the 20th century. Ezra Pound creates his radicalversion in the first years of his long stay in the mental asylum of StElizabeth’s, outside Washington D.C.

Mademoiselle Judith Gautier in Pariscreates the first real Chinese poetry for Europe in her Livre de Jade. The Sinologue Marquis d’Hervey de Saint Denys brings Tangpoetry into the aristocratic salons of Paris. Gustav Mahler, in his Das Lied vonder Erde, basinghimself on Hans Bethge’s Die Chinesische Flöte,draws Chinese poetry into the very heart of European Late Romanticism. Afterthe First World War, Arthur Waley’s translations of the fu , still laden with Edwardian echoes,gradually give way to a new modernist (and sometimes monotonous) method. Amonghis fellow modernists, Ezra Pound, the Arch-Imagist, uses Fenollosa’s notes to createhis Cathay (thereby,according to Eliot’s absurdly pretentious claim, ‘inventing Chinesepoetry’). Pound fights itout with the Hippo-poetess, Amy Lowell, and Fir-Flower Tablets 松花, her collaboration with her wealthyShanghai lady-friend Florence Ayscough. In San Francisco, Witter Bynnercollaborates with the exiled Chinese man-of-letters Kiang Kang-hu to produce The Jade Mountain, a complete 三百首. KennethRexroth and Gary Snyder introduce Chinese poets into the Beat world. Forgottenamong all this half century of modernist fuss were whole generation ofold-fashioned China Coast versifiers such as E. H. Parker (V.W.X.), AlfredLister, Herbert Giles, Charles Budd and W. J. B. Fletcher. Surely it is hightime to do them honour?
