Abstract:
Theworkshop explores the range of responses to religious diversity in traditionalChinese society, as well as the dominant paradigms of religious pluralism thatare peculiar to China. The discussions will cover a number of religious andphilosophical traditions, including Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, Christianity, and popular religion. We will also explore how the Chinese embrace of uniquemodels of religious pluralism, which often involve the simultaneous engagementwith multiple traditions, has shaped the construction of malleable, hybrid, andopen-ended religious identities. While that contrasts with the exclusivereligious identities that tend to be prevalent in traditional Western andIslamic societies, we also need to account for the occasional outbursts ofreligious intolerance and sectarianism throughout Chinese history.
