The lecture will explore the development and character of Buddhist studies, with a focus on the study of East Asian Buddhism, and its changing standing within the academia. It will cover relevant historical trajectories, changing fashions and paradigms, institutional strictures, and key recent developments. There will also be a discussion of the scope, diversity, and (imagined) boundaries of the discipline/field, and some of the issues faced by contemporary researchers. While most of the discussion will center around American contexts and predicaments, these will also be related to global trends and perspectives, including the scholarly study of Buddhism in Europe and Japan.
