There is a clear contradiction between the goal of universal development - as associated with modernization - and the state of the Earth. The exhibition Reset Modernity! presented in 2016, at ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany, proposed a Europe-based reset; a first attempt at stating how Europeans, by resetting their conceptions of modernity, might be made sensitive to this contradiction, and to its resulting ecological mutations.
Convinced that such a notion of resetting could offer a productive protocol and allow for a comparison of results with parallel initiatives in other countries, we wish to make the first of such encounters with China. This will allow for a comparison of different versions of the 'reset’ process and also enable us to test the feasibility of our protocol, which is conceived as an exercise in philosophical diplomacy.
